Can a Chronic or Rare Disease Condition Change How I See Myself? #RareDiseaseDay2026

Rare Disease and illnesses do not just affect the body. They often alter identity.

You may have seen yourself as independent, energetic or career-driven. Awareness initiatives such as Rare Disease Day on 28th February 2026 highlight the medical realities of rare conditions. But the psychological impact is often less visible.

Symptoms may now limit what you can do. That shift can quietly impact confidence and self-esteem. Common internet searches include:

  • Why do I feel depressed because of my chronic illness?

  • How do I stop health anxiety from taking over my life?

  • I have a rare disease — why do I feel like nobody understands?

  • How do I live a normal life with a long-term condition?

  • Does therapy help with illness-related anxiety?

These questions reflect a deeper concern: loss of control.

Why Does Uncertainty Create So Much Anxiety?

Rare conditions are often unpredictable. Flare-ups, new symptoms or unclear prognosis can create constant background stress. The nervous system may stay on high alert, anticipating the next problem. Over time, that can lead to anxiety, irritability or low mood.

How Does Counselling Help With Health Anxiety and Loss of Confidence?

Therapy supports by:

  • Identifying patterns of catastrophic thinking

  • Teaching grounding and regulation skills

  • Exploring fears in a contained way

  • Rebuilding a stable sense of identity

  • Strengthening problem-solving confidence

Counselling helps separate “who I am” from “what I live with.”

Can Therapy Help Me Adapt Rather Than Just Cope?

Yes. Coping is about surviving. Adaptation is about integrating change into your life without losing yourself. Therapy supports that longer-term adjustment process.
